Find the right free payroll calculator

Start with the payroll question you need to answer. Choose a free calculator below, enter your numbers, and see the rule or source behind the result.

  1. 01

    Employee costs and turnover

Calculate a year of wages plus federal employer taxes, compare employee and 1099 contractor costs, or work out turnover using BLS definitions.

    • Cost of an employee calculatorWhen you budget a role: it adds employer Social Security, Medicare, and FUTA to one year of wages, with your own state unemployment, workers’ comp, and benefits figures.
    • Employee vs contractor cost calculatorWhen you price the same work as a W-2 employee and as a 1099 contractor for one year; it compares cost and does not decide who is a contractor.
    • Turnover rate calculatorAt year end: it turns twelve months of separations and employment into a yearly rate on the BLS definitions, beside the BLS annual average rate, which describes an average month.
  2. 02

    Paychecks and PTO

Work through FICA, the overtime regular rate, weekly federal limits for ordinary creditor garnishments, and PTO accrual with your own numbers.

    • FICA calculatorWhen an employee’s year-to-date wages near the Social Security wage base ($184,500 in 2026) or pass $200,000, where Social Security withholding stops and Additional Medicare Tax withholding starts, with no employer match.
    • Overtime regular rate calculatorFor a workweek with overtime and a nondiscretionary bonus, so each overtime hour is paid at 1.5 times the regular rate, not the base rate.
    • Garnishment calculatorWhen an ordinary creditor garnishment order arrives: it finds the federal maximum for one week and one order from disposable earnings; child support and tax levies have other limits, and a state limit can be lower.
    • PTO accrual calculatorWhen you set or check your PTO policy: hours earned each pay period, where an accrual cap stops them, and what a carryover cap forfeits at year end, which some states bar.
  3. 03

    Bonus withholding and gross-up

Calculate federal withholding on a bonus, or work backward from a target net bonus with a federal-only gross-up.

    • Supplemental wages calculatorTo compare federal income tax withholding on one bonus by the 22% flat-rate method and the aggregate method, with a pre-tax 401(k) deferral taken out first.
    • Gross-up calculatorWhen a bonus must leave the employee a set net amount: it finds the gross that covers the 22% federal flat rate, Social Security, and Medicare, federal only: state and local income tax are not included.
  4. 04

    FUTA and late deposit penalties

Work out FUTA and the credit lost, or calculate the penalty for a late federal tax deposit.

    • FUTA calculatorWhen state unemployment tax went in after the Form 940 due date: it works three employees in one state through Form 940 lines 3 to 12 and shows the credit lost (credit reduction states excluded).
    • Payroll tax deposit penalty calculatorWhen a federal tax deposit went in late: it applies the one penalty rate for the calendar days late, since the tiers do not add up.
  5. 05

    ACA affordability and prevailing wage

Test ACA affordability or work through prevailing wage and fringe benefits for a Davis-Bacon workweek.

    • ACA affordability calculatorBefore a plan year: it checks ALE status from an average month of the prior year’s full-time employees and equivalents, tests the lowest-cost self-only premium against the affordability safe harbors, and names the employer shared responsibility payment that could follow.
    • Prevailing wage calculatorFor one workweek on a Davis-Bacon project: it checks your pay against the wage determination’s basic hourly rate plus fringe for each hour, with fringe paid in cash, a bona fide plan, or both, and overtime on the basic rate.
