Qualifying life event

A qualifying life event is a change in an employee’s circumstances, such as marriage or birth, that permits a mid-year change to benefit elections.

A cafeteria plan would otherwise lock those elections for the plan year. Permitted changes come from the cafeteria plan rules, and a requested change must be consistent with the event. A birth supports adding a child, not dropping dental coverage. A change in compensation alone is not a change-in-status event, so it does not open a mid-year change. The plan document supplies the approved rule, and a named reviewer applies it. A qualifying life event is a time-sensitive workflow, not an edit to an existing election.

Which events qualify, and what are the deadlines?

The cafeteria plan rules list change-in-status categories: legal marital status, number of dependents, employment status, dependent eligibility, and residence. A move between part-time and full-time status is an employment status change that can qualify. Federal special enrollment rights run alongside them. Plan documents may allow more time than the federal minimums. They may also set their own deadlines for change-in-status events with no statutory window. Check the plan text for the deadline that applies.

  • At least 60 daysto enroll after losing Medicaid or CHIP coverage.
