Transit payroll tax
A transit payroll tax is a regional or statewide tax that funds public transportation, usually calculated on wages for work performed inside the taxing district.
Transit taxes are local instruments, so they exist only where a legislature created one. Some are withheld from employees; others are an employer expense on total payroll. Every district sets its own covered wages, rate, and filing schedule. Oregon’s statewide transit tax also covers Oregon residents’ wages wherever they work. Other jurisdictions fund transit through other taxes instead, which behave like local withholding rather than an employer payroll expense.
Which transit taxes exist, and where do they apply?
Work location, not the company headquarters address, generally determines whether a transit tax applies. A district is drawn on a map, so one address can sit inside it while another a mile away sits outside. A few programs also look at where the employee lives. A wrong boundary is quiet: payroll runs cleanly and the error surfaces later as a tax noticeTax notice. A tax notice is written correspondence from a federal, state, or local tax agency about your payroll tax account, almost always with a response deadline.Click to open the term or an amended return. Boundaries, rates, and thresholds are revisited often, so the administering agency is the source for current figures.
