HRIS
HRIS (human resource information system) is the software that keeps an employer’s core employee data connected to payroll instead of scattered across spreadsheets.
Core employee data includes identity, employment status, compensation history, organizational structure, and paid time offPaid time off (PTO). A working HRIS makes clear which system owns each field, such as legal name, address, compensation, tax information, and banking. Payroll tax is the umbrella term for every tax an employer calculates, withholds, or owes because it paid wages.Click to open the term setup in one system but stays only as a note in another.
How is an HRIS different from payroll software or HCM?
Many all-in-one platforms combine these under one login, but the record-keeping layer and the payroll calculation are different capabilities. Vendors apply the labels loosely, so compare the module list, the data model, and the reporting rather than the category name.
| SYSTEM | WHAT IT DOES |
|---|---|
| HRIS | Holds the employee system of record: identity, status, compensation history, and documents |
| Payroll software | Turns approved time and compensation into pay, taxes, and filings for a specific period |
| HCM (human capital management) | Coordinates across both, adding scheduling, time and attendance, benefits administration, performance, and learning on the same records |
